Conversation Analysis in Sport and Exercise Sciences

March 27, 2026

A newly-published paper co-authored by IMH Fellow Virginia Calabria and Brett Smith, Co-Lead of the Narrative Practices Lab, outlines the method of Conversation Analysis and how it can be applied to Sport and Exercise Science.

A group of people exercises outdoors on a sunny day, running in a circle around blue cones. They wear athletic clothing, conveying a sense of energy.

Conversation Analysis is a qualitative approach which examines how social interaction is organised through talk. In the paper, Virginia and Brett discuss how this method can offer powerful insights into how things like coaching, feedback and identity actually manifest into real-time accomplishments. As part of the paper, the authors outline an agenda for using Conversation Analysis within Sport and Exercise Sciences in the future.

It shows how Conversation Analysis can enrich Sport and Exercise Sciences research by adding a vital interactional lens, complementing existing methods.
