Lab Coat Lunches 2026: Visual and material practice within and beyond the medical humanities

Interested in the breadth of visual and material practice in healthcare and the medical humanities? Keen to learn more about methodological innovation, critical enquiry and interdisciplinary collaboration?

The new ‘Lab Coat Lunches’ online event series will highlight diverse (and often hidden) visual and material methods and approaches from clinical, academic and community practice.

This series takes as its starting point the idea that visual and material practices – both the well-established and the cutting-edge – provide a crucial and coherent link between seemingly disparate areas of healthcare design and delivery.

From cell biologists and bioengineers working with a glass artist to provide bespoke facial moulds for tissue cultures, to immersive reality specialists working with patient groups to provide alternative vocabularies for chronic pain, these practices are everywhere, but not often focused on in their own right.

This new series seeks to bring together anyone using or researching visual and material methods in the medical humanities and clinical practice, both inside and outside academia. Our ultimate goal is to demonstrate the continued importance of visual and material methods in health and care, and to facilitate new collaboration in the field across different fields and approaches.

Free and online, booking essential – see Eventbrite links for individual events below.

Lab Coat Lunches are brought to you by the Visual and Material Lab at the Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities.
