New Paper Published on Speed

July 26, 2024
Two cyclists wearing full cycling gear cycle down a park path in the daytime.

A new paper, advancing how expressions of speed are understood and theorised, was published in the journal ‘Environment & Planning F’ this month. Led by Professor Gavin Andrews and co-authored with Dr Meridith Griffin (MBL collaborator) and Professor Cassie Phoenix (MBL Lead), this Canada-UK collaboration extended current thinking around how speed is involved in our understanding of space and our movement through it.

In the paper, the authors used participant observations of different forms of cycling including spin classes, cycle commuting, and longer distance road biking, to help articulate theoretical understandings of speed and how they play out in social contexts.

The paper can be viewed and freely downloaded from here.
