The Institute for Medical Humanities at Durham University is delighted to announce a transformative collaboration with Centre for Mental Health to explore new directions in mental health research.

David Woodhead, Associate Director of Research at Centre for Mental Health, with many years of experience in public mental health and coproduction, will dedicate two days a week over the next two years to this partnership.

David’s work will focus on innovative projects that highlight the lived experiences of queer individuals, reimagine conventional understandings of addiction, and explore the profound dynamics of psychotherapeutic group work.

This collaboration is made possible through Durham University’s Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities funded by Wellcome.

The Platform brings together researchers from different sectors, disciplines, and areas of expertise to co-develop new approaches to widespread health challenges, including mental health and health inequalities.

Andy Bell, CEO of Centre for Mental Health, said: “David’s pioneering research and expertise will bring invaluable insights to this partnership. Together, we will challenge norms, spark conversations, and deepen our understanding of diverse experiences in mental health.”

Professor Angela Woods, Director of the Discovery Research Platform and the Institute for Medical Humanities, remarked: “We are thrilled to welcome David to Durham University. His work exemplifies the transformative power of centring lived experience in research, and we look forward to seeing the impact of this collaboration across our shared fields of study.”

Professor Ben Alderson-Day, Co-Director of the Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities, added: “This partnership combines the strengths of both organisations to push boundaries and rethink mental health research. It’s an exciting opportunity to make a real difference.”

This marks a bold new chapter for both Durham University and Centre for Mental Health, united in their commitment to justice, fairness, and innovative approaches to wellbeing.
