Honorary Fellow Tamarin Norwood appeared on the BMJ Medical Humanities podcast episode ‘The Art of Transgression’, which explored art as a tool for breaking through silos and crossing boundaries.
Drawing on her experience as an artist, Norwood suggested that while artistic practice within healthcare is most often framed in relation to compassion and empathy, the ‘deepest knowledges’ of the artist studio (that is, the hidden underpinning knowledge and expertise that artists build up over a lifetime of working) are still almost entirely unrecognised within medical humanities practice and research. If medicine is truly committed to learning from the humanities, Norwood suggested, it needs to be more curious about what it is that the artist knows that is below the surface of the painting or sculpture.
Tamarin Norwood was speaking alongside Dr. Monica Lalanda on the Medical Humanities Podcast: Medicine and the Humanities: the art of transgression, 8 May 2026. https://www.podbean.com/ew/pb-x8x7u-1ab0a44
