Welcome to Tamarin Norwood: New Honorary Fellow in the Visual & Material Lab

October 3, 2025

We warmly welcome Tamarind Norwood, who joins the Institute for Medical Humanities in the Visual & Material Lab as an Honorary Fellow.

Tamarin looks into the camera from her studio

Tamarin Norwood is an author and academic with a background in fine art. Her current work addresses two key areas: the role of narrative in ‘crafting’ grief experiences in reproductive loss; and the wider potential of creative practice (as distinct from the processes and products of the creative arts) in medical humanities and medical training.

Her literary memoir of neonatal loss, The Song of the Whole Wide World (2024) was reviewed in the TLS, The Lancet and The Guardian, and is now part of medical and midwifery curricula in the UK and Australia. This work builds on her essay ‘Something Good Enough’, winner of the Wakley Essay Prize in The Lancet.

Tamarin was awarded a three-year Leverhulme ECR Fellowship at Loughborough University in 2023, and in 2025 was appointed Associate Editor at BMJ group journal Medical Humanities.

We look forward to working with Tamarin and welcome her to Durham.
