Last month, the Narrative Practices Lab hosted a hybrid workshop that brought academic and artistic perspectives in dialogue to explore how tarot might be reclaimed as a narrative method.
Through a decolonial lens, we unpacked the narrative affordances of tarot as a textual experience and unpacked how marginalised bodies and bodies of knowledge gain expression through tarot as a medium. Artist Lotta Petronella shared her tarot practice as a mode of relating to and redeeming ecological connections between bodies and colonised lands, while Arya Thampuran and Kelechi Anucha offered insight into their use of tarot to reclaim and represent voices relegated to the realm of the occult, spiritual, or pseudo-scientific. We were fundamentally interested in and committed to deconstructing the mind-body duality and individualism often privileged in a research space; we invited participants to move freely and intuitively around the space and engage with the decks on display in a tactile, felt way.
Participants also had the opportunity to create their own cards and draw from the co-produced deck to reimagine what embodied and collective practice in an academic space.
